The television set crackled and popped. A thin wisp of acidic, black smoke rose from the back. DD Hershey ducked behind the lunch counter. She struggled to catch her breath, and Tank, her dog, cowered by her side.

“Did you see that, Tank?” she whispered, drawing the dog closer. She peered around the corner and was surprised to see that the set’s power cord lay on the floor, unplugged from the wall. Her first impulse was to rush to plug it in, but she pulled back when a fluorescent green line appeared on the screen, followed by a pink one just below. Traveling horizontally the width of the screen, the colorful lines crisscrossed in waves of chaotic patterns. A blinding electrical flash followed, and the lines tangled into a mess, accompanied by deafening snaps.

Tank, startled, bolted through the doggie door and raced down the street.
